On
April 16, 2001, the Desert Healthcare Foundation, one of the developers
of Hanson House, held a ceremonial groundbreaking that drew more
than 150 people in the community and several prominent elected individuals,
including Congresswoman Mary Bono, representatives from California
State Senator Jim Battin's office and California State Assemblyman
David Kelly's office and several local city council members.
The
project came together quite well in that all the $2.4 million funding
needed for development was raised and an endowment is now being
created to ensure that operating funds will be generated from it
in future years. A formal committee of community members, an architectural
design and engineering firm and representatives of the lead organizations
for the development and operations of Hanson House (i.e., Hanson
House Foundation, Desert Healthcare Foundation, Tenet Health Systems,
and Desert Healthcare District) have been working diligently to
raise funds, design the facility, publicize the need for the facility,
rally community support and develop operational plans and policies.
Phase
I of Hanson House was completed with a grand opening on December
1, 2003. It consists of eight guest rooms, indoor and outdoor dining
areas, a living room, a common living room and reception area, meditation/chapel,
physician/family conference room, kitchen, laundry room, etc. Phase
II was planned to consist of eight additional rooms. The style is that of
a Spanish mission.
The
generous contribution of the John R. and M. Margrite Davis Foundation in September 2003,
provided the initial funding for Phase II of Hanson House just as Phase I was nearing completion.
Phase II was completed in May, 2007. Today, Hanson House provides a total of 16 guestrooms for the
families of the critically ill and injured being cared for at Desert Regional Medical Center and other Coachella Valley hospitals.
